In its day, the CSS Virginia was one of the most effective ships on the water. This ship had been rumored to be such a good ship because it was made of parts from other, even better ships. The ironclad, like so many others of its type, was both long and wide. In this manner, the ship could have a heavy iron covering without sinking. In order to maintain this delicate balance, the width of the ship was wider when compared to most normal ships of the day. The first ironclad battle took place during the chaos of the American civil war. Barricades were also a vital part of this particular war, as such ironclads were used in the defensive lines along the coast of America. The power of these vessels as long range cruisers was nearly unrivaled on the ocean. The CSS Virginia was famous for having a wide array of extremely high tech cannons. As a result of the high power, cannons had an excessive kickbacks. A sailor always took care to keep clear of the cannons when they were firing.
